Sketch-22, last year’s irreverent live sketch comedy show, returns for a second season of all new material this summer.
Featuring the creative wits of performers Rob MacDonald, Graham Putnam, Jason Rogerson, Andrew Sprague, Josh Weale and newcomer Dennis Trainor, with additional material by Matt Rainnie, the group probes the underbelly of Island life in original and satirical sketches. Like last season, no topic is off-limits - overzealous waste management players, the lengths people are willing to take to become Islanders, and Maritimers’ obsession with nicknames are all part of the show’s diverse comedic mix.
“When we began writing new material for 2005, we were all a bit nervous, wondering if we could match, or even top the success of our first season,” says Sketch’s Rob MacDonald. “And while it's the audience that will ultimately make that assessment, I think that all of us in Sketch-22 feel this season's show is even stronger than last year's.”
The use of video during the show adds a whole other dimension to the production.
Whether they are stand-alones, or videos that compliment on-stage action, these shorts transport the audience outside the walls of the performance hall, while showcasing notable Island locations.
“Video is an essential part of our show,” says producer Jason Rogerson. “It provides a creative freedom beyond the confines of the stage, and the potential for the comedy to be even more over the top. In terms of sheer outrageousness, this season delivers.”
Rounding out this season’s production team are stage manager, Ghislaine O’Hanley and crew master, Ryan Townshend. Graphic design is by Laura O’Brien, with website design by Jason Alward of verge.
Recently chosen to showcase at the 2005 Contact East event in Summerside this October, Sketch-22 appeared on CBC Radio’s “Madly Off in All Directions” with Lorne Elliot last winter. This exposure, along with a new website at www.sketch22.ca, has allowed the group to spread their unique brand of comedy to an even wider audience.
Sketch-22, Season 2 opens July 7 and runs Thursday and Friday nights through August 26 at 8 p.m. at the Arts Guild in Charlottetown. Tickets are $15, available exclusively at the door. Doors open at 7 p.m. The group is also appearing at the Harbourfront Jubilee Theatre, July 9 & 23 and August 6 & 20 at 8 p.m. Tickets for Jubilee Theatre performances are $15, and can be purchased at the door or reserved by calling 1-800-708-6505.
